WNY Trendy Trikes was born from the dreams of two children who wanted to do what so many of their siblings and peers were doing — ride a bike.

​

For these children, riding a bike required adaptive trikes with the specialized supports to meet their individual needs. Their families and therapists worked tirelessly to obtain funding through insurance and Medicaid, but their requests were denied because the trikes were considered “not medically necessary.”

​

The reality was that these adaptive trikes, which provided opportunities for independence, inclusion, and participation, came with a price tag of nearly $3,000 — an amount that was simply out of reach for many families.

Determined to find a solution, one of the therapists discovered an AMBUCS chapter in Jamestown, New York, that was providing adaptive tricycles to children in need. Because of the generosity of AMBUCS volunteers and donors, these children were finally able to experience the joy and freedom of riding a bike.

Seeing the impact these trikes had on children and families, the therapist knew there was a need for an AMBUCS chapter closer to home — one that could serve children throughout Western New York.

And from that vision, WNY Trendy Trikes was created.
